Trends and Issues in Social Studies conveys a research-based understanding on the challenges that affect the teaching of social science disciplines in basic education. It provides in-depth discussion of trends and issues involving social science disciplines like history, geography, and economics, which are integrated into Social Studies curriculum. This research-based textbook features an analysis of a controversial topic in Philippine history and provides a resolution according to the recent findings in history education. It also features accounts from observations of Philippine history classes to show the instantiation of concepts and theories from the literature of history education. In addition, this book gives essential insights on the evolution of geography as a discipline and its role in the Social Studies curriculum. Moreover, this book proposes a direction that economics education in the secondary level should take to help develop students to become citizens who can truly help in nation-building. Hence, this research-based textbook is useful in teaching the major course titled Trends and Issues in Social Studies under the competency-based/outcomes-based Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Social Studies program as prescribed in the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum Order No. 75, series of 2017. The reference materials used were carefully curated to address the need for a reliable instructional material for Social Studies teacher educators and pre-service teachers. Further, this textbook is also helpful to in-service teachers, practitioners, and graduate students to address issues and update themselves with the current trends in teaching Social Studies in basic education. |
