Summary: Abstract: The main objective of the study was to determine the type of code switching commonly used by grade school teachers. Specifically, the study aimed to answer the following: the types of code -switching do teachers use in teaching the selected grade school subject areas categorized as inter-sentential, intra-sentential and tag-switching and the average occurrence of code-switching in the following subject areas English, Math, Science, and Home Economics and Livelihood Education. The researchers found out that the teachers in HELE tend to code-switch the most often among the subjects. The teacher code-switched after every 3 straight English utterances while two teachers in English subject never code-switched. The use of code-switching also depends on the kind f activity that was given to the pupils. For hands-on activity, teachers tend to code-switch more often than in classes with lecture-type activity. It has been found out that when teachers use code-switching, they frequently use the intra-sentential type of which Cebuano language is used inside of within the sentence or clause level or at its boundaries. The researchers came up with a conclusion that teachers who are non native speakers of English language will really code-switch to mother-tongue. The use of code-switching provides teachers smooth facilitation in the lesson and in the activity. It is indispensable especially to subjects with high technical terms and in student-centered activity. The researchers recommended specifically that teachers should be aware of their purpose in code-switching and the effects brought by it and future researchers should conduct a study on the implication of code-switching in the academic performance.
