In 1905 Dr. Graham, with his American wife Lilian Elizabeth Wilson Holmes, was called to the Philippine Islands by the Presbyterian Board. His daughter Merne was born in 1899 in Brazil. He adopted his third daughter Facunda as a three-year-old in 1918. In 1938 Carlos P. Garcia presented Dr. Graham with the award "Son of Bohol" in Tagbilaran. Two years later, Dr. Graham died, leaving Merne and Facunda to carry on. April 1942 found them hiding from the Japanese invaders, in the hills and caves, a mother in the party even had to give birth in a cave! Much of this book exists because Facunda and her husband Andres Ballares kept all letters and documents hoping that one day they would be of significance. Great help was also given by the United Church of Christ in the Philippines and the Ramiro family.
