the main purpose of the study was to determine the reading motivation level and the significant difference on the reading motivation of senior high school students at Holy Name University in the three academic strands: HUMSS, STEM, and ABM in the school year 2018-2019.
This study used descriptive survey with the aid of the standardized Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) by Guthrie, Wigfield and McGough (1996) in gathering information about the reading motivation of senior high school respondents as grouped by academic strands.
results revealed that HUMSS respondents scored the highest among the three academic strands in terms of reading motivation level. It is also revealed that there is a significant difference on the reading motivation of HUMSS, STEM, and ABM.
It was concluded that the reading motivation of senior high school students differs by strands. ABM and STEM students deal with numbers while HUMSS students are more inclined into literary appreciation and writing. The strand of choice, then, is a factor to be considered in reading motivation.
it is recommended that the findings of the study will be used by educators as basses on the identification of teaching strategies and techniques to enhance reading motivation of students, as well as the result be presented to HUMSS, STEM, and ABM students at the start of the school year.
