Over the past several decades, hoteliers have turned their focus to the importance of sustainability in the hospitality industry as it relates to hotel development and operations, including the environmental, economic and social impact. Aspects of the hospitality industry are being impacted by this movement as promoting green travel destinations, green hotels, green eateries, green meeting facilities, green convention centers, as well as green suppliers. Improved technology can make gains in energy efficiency more easily attainable. Water conservation and recycling are key components of an effective water management program. Among hospitality industry practices in current use are collecting rainwater, placing water meters in guestrooms to track usage, and grinding guest soaps to use as laundry detergent for hotel uniforms. Hotel sustainability is on the rise thanks to changing customer preferences, demographics, and more. Green travel benefits hotels in several different ways; from saved costs to gaining competitive advantages and risk management.
